English

The Esteghlal Dam in Minab County, Hormozgan Province, is a primary source of drinking and industrial water for Bandar Abbas. Surplus water is allocated to irrigation networks for agricultural lands in Minab. However, the persistent decline in rainfall over recent years has led to a significant reduction in the dam’s water level, thereby hindering efficient water withdrawal through the outlet structures. To address this issue, a floating structure has been proposed. This structure remains on the water surface and utilizes suction pumps to facilitate water transfer toward the outlet gates. It consists of two cylindrical pontoons with a diameter of 1.2 meters, placed 4.3 meters apart, connected via a deck and stiffeners, and stabilized using mooring cables anchored to the dam body, with the design validated numerically. After validating the proposed model, the hydrodynamic behavior of the structure—including buoyancy, righting moment curves, and righting arm responses under applied loads—was evaluated. Once satisfactory hydrodynamic performance was confirmed, the structural performance of the floating pumping platform was assessed through analysis of stress contours, forces acting on the structure (particularly at pump installation points), and deck deflection levels. The final results indicated that the proposed floating structure, with a freeboard of 0.45 meters, a deck deflection of less than 1.5 cm, and a stress ratio below 0.8, meets the criteria for an efficient floating pumping system. It can serve as an effective solution for sustainable water extraction from the dam.
