Modeling Time and Cost Using LPS and VSM Techniques for Linear Project Success

Abstract
Lean construction is one of the most effective modern approaches for reducing project time and costs. In the construction industry, linear projects face challenges due to significant waste and repetitive operational processes, with numerous factors influencing their success. Given that previous studies have rarely examined precise modeling of success factors and their relationship to the performance of linear projects, the primary aim of this research is to model and analyze time and cost factors in linear projects using lean construction techniques—specifically, the Last Planner System (LPS) and Value Stream Mapping (VSM)—to reduce time and cost waste, thereby enhancing performance, reducing risks, and increasing productivity in the lean construction industry. This study, centered on modeling success factors in linear projects, seeks to minimize and eliminate waste. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze data and examine the relationship between techniques and project success. The findings demonstrate that implementing the Last Planner System and Value Stream Mapping significantly reduces time and cost waste, ultimately improving project success. These techniques enhance project productivity by optimizing workflows, improving resource management, and reducing unnecessary activities, helping to achieve goals such as timely project completion, cost control, and improved execution quality. Additionally, results indicate that the Last Planner System has a greater impact on reducing time waste, whereas Value Stream Mapping is more effective in reducing cost waste. Finally, this research recommends that clients and project managers of linear projects utilize lean construction techniques to improve overall project performance and increase the likelihood of success.
