Abstract

Masonry structures like as dome, arch and vault are part of the culture and civilization of each country, therefore, must be kept secure and maintained, frequently. Lack of information about the structural behavior of ancient structures may cause to undesirable damages and be a treat for their stability. In this study, structural behavior and stress distribution of nine common types of arches includes Steep Goat Horn, Goat Horn, Oval, Clover, Patvpa, Basket Handles, Half Circle, Square and Klyl at ancient architecture, under dead load plus seismic loading, using numerical modeling were studied based on finite element method. Results showed stress concentration at critical points, which were at Shokrgahy and Tizeh of the arch geometry. The tensile stresses in these areas were about four times more than contact points. Data mapping acceleration for dynamic analysis of a semi-desert area were used. After comparing the results, it was observed that proper Klyl arch had the best performance and its tensile and compressive stresses were about 0.65 and 0.075 of the allowed stresses of used materials, respectively. According to the stress analysis, crack developments also were investigated. It was observed that the cracks start from the inside of the arch in the way of Shokrgahy.
